Paidea vs Ludus

Today we explored one of Newmans suggestions towards categorizing games the main two are Paidea and Ludus games.

Paidea Paidea games are games which have no set rules to them and are played for leisure and where the player is allowed to do almost anything they like freely, for example games like Skyrim or Minecraft where the player can go off on their own into the in game world and enjoy themselves with out even following any stories or set goals.

Ludus Ludus games are the opposite, the played is limited and set to a specific goal and a specific way of going about playing it, for example most FPS's like Call of Duty, Battlefield and Medal of Honor are all set to playing a certain way and have set goals and have to progress through the game to get better weapons

Newman then splits these two category's up even more into another 4 types of game within Paidea and Ludus Agon - Competitive play Alea - Game play based on chance Ilinx - Game based on the movement within it Mimicry - meaning simulation
Games Paidea Ludus
Agon Fifa League of Legends
Alea Risk of Rain Poker
Ilinx Train Simulator Sonic the Hedgehog
Mimicry Minecraft Pokémon WarThunder

Introduction Interview

So yeah this is my blog where I will be posting game related stuff that I will be doing during the Games Design course that I am currently on, I will also probably post things that I have been doing outside of the course but they will still be game related!

To start with we were all given the task of talking to the person sat next to us and asking them a series of questions to help us all to get to know each other a bit better here are the questions and the answers I responded with:

What is the title of the book (fiction) you are currently reading (or the last fiction book you read)?

I don't really read books that much anymore but the last one I read was a couple of years ago and was part of a series called "The Keys To The Kingdom" by an Author called Garth Nix. These were are all named after the main antagonist of each of the seven books and they were all named after different weekdays, for example Mister Monday, Sir Tuesday an so on.

What is the title/topic of the book (non-fiction) you are currently reading (or the last non-fiction book you read)?

I'm not to sure, it would probably be the Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate Guide if that counts as non-fiction.

What was the last live performance (music, drama or dance) you attended?

The last performance I went to would probably been with the college I studied at. It was a performance of a group called Angry vs the Bear, we went to this because some students had made music videos and they'd then choose their favorite one and display it in the background of their live performance. But before that would have been a a show I was in where I played electric guitar with the College and the School, it was our version of the "We Will Rock You" stage show. Outside of college/school must have been a concert at the Norwich UEA where I saw the band Children of Bodom who were Supported by two bands, Amon Amarth and Ensiferum or when I saw the band Trivium.

What is the title of the last film you saw at the cinema/online or watched on dvd?

The last film that I saw in the cinema was about a month ago where I went with a couple of mates and saw Insidious 2. But the last movie I saw on DVD online was "The Worlds End" which was the last film in the Cornetto Trilogy.

How often do you read a newspaper? (Which one? Online or physical?)

I don't read it very often I only do now and then if it's on the table and I have nothing else better to do.

Which art gallery/museum/exhibition did you last visit?

Eurogamer if that counts?

How many hours a week do you spend playing video games?

The answer to that is probably to many, probably anywhere from 35 to 80 Hours. I end up loosing track of time and end up going to sleep at about 4 when I realize it's way to late and I have to get up at 6:30 :L For example after Eurogamer I got back home at about 10:00pm and then went to my mates house where we had a League of Legends LAN party with about 7 other guys, I didn't get to sleep till 7:30 the next day but they were a great 27 hours! :P
How many hours a week do you  spend playing games other than video games?
I don't play many non video games. The only non video game I play is probably Yu-Gi-Oh because I have some mates I play the game with and there is a local club that I got to every fortnight. But other than then I don't really play, so maybe about 2-3 hours a week at the most.

So that's my Introduction Interview! Thank you for reading it even if it does seem a bit boring! :L But now you know a little about me!
